The History behind Edgewood

Edgewood is a residential community between the shores of some of Central Florida’s most beautiful lakes—Conway, Gatlin, Jennie Jewel, Jessamine and Mary Jess. Located on lands previously used for agriculture, the streets of the City are graced with many magnificent old oak trees, lending a quiet elegance to the area.

In 1924, the nineteen residents of the community just north of Pine Castle met and voted to incorporate the area. That realization occurred on April 24, 1924. They named their new town Edgewood, possibly because it was a wooded area on the edge of Lake Conway. In 1960, Edgewood was declared a bird sanctuary. The first formal census of the town, taken in 1962, showed a population of 436 people living in Edgewood.

The City Charter was submitted to the State in 1969. That same year, property on Larue Avenue was purchased and a town hall was built. In 1973, because of the population growth, the town became the City of Edgewood. Presently, Edgewood has approximately 2,100 residents with more than 350 thriving businesses along South Orange Avenue.
